Xbox 360

Launched in time for the 2005 Christmas season, the Xbox 360 was the first next generation console launched.  It allows for true high definition gaming up to 1080p.  It is backwards compatible with 100's of original Xbox games and has 2 basic system choices.

There are currently several versions of the Xbox 360 consoles available each of which comes with a wireless controller, HDMI output and free access to Xbox Live Silver.  Below is a brief description of the options.

  • Xbox 360 Core Arcade Bundle - The Core Arcade Bundle is a great, low cost option to get you started in next generation gaming.  Although it does not include a hard drive, it does include a 256MB memory unit.  The Arcade Bundle comes with 5 arcade titles and now for a limited time is offering a free copy of LEGO Batman.
  • Xbox 360 Console Includes 60GB Hard Drive - This version adds a 60GB hard drive, a headset and component av cables.  The 60GB hard drive not only allows additional game saves, but allows downloading movies and demos off of Xbox Live as well as updates to games such as additional levels, etc.
  • Xbox 360 Elite System Console Includes 120GB Hard Drive - The Elite console adds a 120GB detachable Hard drive and an HDMI drive for the ultimate in HD gaming. 

The Xbox 360 is not just a game console, but a digital entertainment console that allows streaming of music and videos, downloadable HD movies and TV shows, communication with a headset between friends and also boasts an add on HD-DVD player.

Xbox LIVE

Xbox's LIVE service is a cutting edge interactive gaming service available to Xbox 360 owners with a storage device and broadband connection.  Xbox LIVE comes in a Silver and Gold level.

The Silver membership is included free with the Xbox 360.  It allows you to:  

  • Create gamer profiles
  • Send and receive text and voice messages
  • Maintain a friends list
  • Access Marketplace, offering demos, trailers, downloadable content and Xbox LIVE Arcade as well as gives you the ability to download HD movies and TV shows to your hard drive
  • Access massive multiplayer games (may require an additional fee)

The Gold membership includes all the benefits of the Silver membership plus:

  • Multiplayer gaming online
  • Enhanced feedback and friends list

The Xbox 360 is generally seen as a console marketed to an older gaming audience.  That being said there is a wide variety of games available for the 360 such as first person shooters developed with a more mature gamer in mind to sports games and family games intended for a wider audience.
